Way to go, Courtney!
Courtney Pay is one of our young
members with a lot on the go!
Courtney, a grade 12 student at
Governor Simcoe Secondary School in
St. Catharines, calls our Bunting Road
office her home branch. Last year, she
and her dedicated volleyball teammates
fought hard to qualify for the OFSSA
tournament and brought home GOLD!
Not only can you catch Courtney on
the volleyball court, but if you are
an early riser you can also catch her
training in the water. Courtney is a
coxie for a senior mens’ 8 heavy rowing team, and has traveled to
New Jersey and Philadelphia where they won the American School Boy. Courtney excels not only athletically but also scholastically as she has been an honours student since grade 9.
In addition to her love of sports and dedication to her studies, Courtney
enjoys the piano, reading, spending time with her family and working
part-time at Boston Pizza on Ontario Street in St. Catharines.
Whew, we wish we had her energy!!
All the best in 2008 Courtney – way to go!
Arctic Adventure
Our winter just wasn’t cold enough for long-time member
Bob Briggs-Jude, a Medical Radiation Technologist, retired from the
Niagara Health System. Bob traveled to the Rankin Inlet, Nunavut
Territory on January 2, to take on the duties of the local medical
centre technologist on leave.
When Bob talks about the reaction others had to his announcement,
he notes that support is strong at home. He adds, “One person
thought I had stood up too quickly and the blood had never
returned to the brain… and a co-worker asked me if I had lost a
bet!” It’s hard to imagine that someone would want to leave our
winter weather for colder temperatures but that’s exactly what
Bob did. He viewed it as an adventure. It's long been a hope of
Bob’s to see the Arctic and get North
to the Arctic Circle.
At the Cilia Health Centre, where Bob
was working, patients are flown in for
their x-rays and other medical services
that are not provided in the smaller
communities. The centre services the
communities of Baker Lake, Resolute
Bay, Chesterfield Inlet, Whale Cove,
Aviate, Coral Labour and of course,
Rankin Inlet.
Bob has provided his perspective on
the Arctic and if you’re interested,
you can check out what living
really North was like, on-line at
